The Pact

This being a Powderwhore movie, you know it’s all about telemark skiing.  However, there are very few granola-colored hippie ways on display here.  What you get is awesome skiing and great talent sending it. Chris Erickson opens up with some aggressive but smooth turns and hucks.  Will Cardamone steps up in the same way and he’s always a pleasure to watch because his skill level is so high and he has no problem tackling the steeps.  “The Pact” is back country and big mountain-centric as there’s not too many kids on telemark skis in the parks and on the rails (yet).  Nick Devore’s segment shows what the Powderwhore team can do best using the combination of cameras on the mountain (no helicopters here) and helmet cams.  In fact, “The Pact” showcases Jonah Howell’s emerging style as a cinematographer.  He’s good with the telephoto lens catching his crew of skiers descending massive lines and pulling the camera back smoothly to show you the paralyzing scope of what’s happening as it unfolds.  It’s a stylistic approach he’s perfected in his more recent film “Tele-Vision”.  The split screen effect at the right and left hand sides of the screen is a little annoying however.  It’s much better when the full wide screen is allowed to spread out and breathe – the beauty of the shots of the landscape needs this type of space.  Closing out “The Pact”, EJ’s Poplawski’s segment is definitely inspiring while being scary as hell.  EJ loses his leg below the knee in a skiing accident and the results are shown in graphic detail.  And while his pain spills out onscreen, so does his boundless courage as he rebuilds his skills to ultimately get back on skis and on the steeps courtesy of a space-age prosthetic leg.  You can’t keep a good skier down.  Cool movie and a good team of skiers, making Powderwhore a company to keep an eye on.    By Mark “The Attorney General” Quail
